Following the extraordinary gambling turn out for Euro 2004 and the surprising result, wagering has already begun on the outcome of the 2006 World Cup. Online betting exchanges are already offering odds on the outcome and punters starting placing bets- before the qualifying rounds have even been played.

Inspired by the extraordinary win one man had on Euro 2004, punters have been moved to start placing bets on outsiders- teams that would not be thought of as even likely qualifiers for the world cup. One bet placed via online exchange Totalbet has been for £100 each way on Saudi Arabia winning the prestigious tournament- with odds currently at 2000/1. The same punter has placed £200 each way on Chile winning, again with long odds- this time at 200/1.

A spokesperson for Totalbet, Grant Williams has commented on the bets, 'He obviously thinks that if Greece can win Euro 2004 then another outsider can go all the way and lift the Jules Rimet trophy in two years time.'

Totalbet have also already taken bets on Greece repeating their victory in the World Cup, and following their performance against Portugal on Sunday have cut their odds from 150/1 to 100/1. 'Greece winning Euro 2004 was a superb result for the bookies and punters are already looking forward to getting their own back in Germany. The Greek defence was simply awesome in Portugal and if they can qualify for the finals in Germany they will certainly be one side to watch out for.'

Currently the favourites to win are Brazil at 11/2, followed by France at 8/1, Germany at 9/1 and Argentina and Italy both at 10/1.
